## How to play

1. Mark rectangles 6 metres wide and 11 metres long, side by side. One pair and one ball in each.
2. The two players stand at opposite short ends. The passer plays the ball along the ground to the receiver, who takes it into the rectangle, and the passer comes straight in to win it.
3. Whoever has the ball after 8 seconds scores a point. A ball that leaves the rectangle counts as lost by whoever touched it last.
4. The coach starts and stops every rectangle together, so all the pairs play at once. Swap roles after every duel; first to 5 wins, then change partners.

## The decision it trains

The receiver's decision starts with the first touch: where to take the ball depends on where the presser is coming from. Then, for eight seconds, they choose between shielding, turning away into the free half, or dribbling round to buy space, and they change their choice as the presser changes angle. The presser decides how fast to close after the pass, which side to come from, and when to commit to a tackle rather than wait for a heavy touch.

## Make it harder or easier

- **Too hard:** the presser may not start until the receiver's first touch.
- **Too easy:** add a second way to score: dribble over the passer's end line within the 8 seconds for 2 points, which turns safe keeping into a choice.
- **Younger players:** keep the ball for five seconds instead of eight.

## What to ask at the breaks

- "Where did your first touch take the ball, and why there?"
- "What helped you most in the last few seconds?"
- "When you were pressing, when did you decide to go in for the ball?"

## Where it comes from

The rule set comes from the Italian federation: 1 contro 1 "Mantengo il possesso della palla" ("I keep the ball") is one of the duels in its 2023/24 competition model for U10 and U11, and the same duels are used in its U8/U9 and U12/U13 models. Keep-ball duels are played everywhere; the eight seconds are the Italian rule. No second source with the same rules has been found.
