## How to play

1. Mark a pitch 20 metres wide and 30 metres long with a halfway line and a goal and keeper at each end. Make three pairs.
2. One pair starts with the ball on the halfway line and attacks one goal, 2v2 against the pair defending it. The third pair defends the goal in the other half.
3. When the attack ends with a goal, a save or the ball out, the keeper gives the ball to the pair who defended, and they attack the other half against the third pair. If the defenders win the ball themselves, they go at once, without waiting for the keeper.
4. The pair whose attack has just ended stays in that half and gets ready to defend that goal: the next attack comes at them within seconds.
5. Keep it rolling: attack, defend, attack. Every 4 minutes, two players from the pairs swap with the keepers. With more than eight players, run a second pitch alongside.

## The decision it trains

In attack, the pair keeps choosing between going alone and combining. The player on the ball takes the defender on when there is room, or draws them in and passes when the partner is free; the partner decides whether to come close for a short pass or run away to stretch the defence. In defence, the pair decides how high to defend: step up and keep the attackers away from shooting distance, or drop and protect the goal, and who presses while the other covers. Then comes the switch. The moment the defenders win the ball they are the attackers, with no pause in between: the quicker they go, the less time the next pair has to step up and close them down.

## Make it harder or easier

- **Too hard:** if the attacks rarely end in a shot, widen the pitch to 25 metres, so there is more space to attack.
- **Too easy:** if every attack scores, narrow the pitch to 15 metres, so the defenders close faster.
- **Next step:** play in threes: three groups of three and two keepers, 3v3 rolling from half to half.

## What to ask at the breaks

- "When did you go alone, and when did you pass to your partner?"
- "Defending, how far up the pitch did you go to meet them, and why?"
- "When you won the ball, how quickly were you attacking?"

## Where it comes from

The FA documents it in its England Football Learning sessions as "2v2 attack vs defence" (2022), shared by Adam Dunleavy, an FA coach development officer. No source names who created it.
