## How to play

1. Mark a pitch 20 metres wide and 25 metres long with a goal and a keeper at each end. Two teams of three outfield players and a keeper. Four setters in a third colour stand on the end lines, one each side of each goal.
2. Each team attacks the goal in front of it and may use the two setters on that end line. Setters stay on their line, cannot be tackled, and always pass back to the team that gave them the ball, to whichever player they choose.
3. A goal counts one. If your team passes to a setter, gets the ball back and scores before the other team touches it, the goal counts two.
4. When the defending team wins the ball, it attacks the other goal at once, with the setters at that end. After a save or a ball over the end line, the keeper restarts.
5. Change the setters every 3 minutes, so everyone takes a turn on the line. With ten players, use one setter at each end.

## The decision it trains

The player on the ball keeps weighing the same choice: shoot now for one, or play it into a setter for the chance of two. A shot from a crowded angle can be worth less than a pass to the setter, who returns it across the front of the goal while the keeper is still moving. But the pass to the setter only pays if a teammate arrives in the right place at the right moment, so the others decide where to run: to the near post, across to the far post, or back into space where the return will find them. The setter decides which teammate to give it to. Defenders cannot touch the setter, so they choose between marking the runners and blocking the shot.

## Make it harder or easier

- **Too hard:** add a wide player on each touchline who plays for the team on the ball, cannot be tackled and may also pass to the setters.
- **Too easy:** a shot after a setter's return must be first time, or make the pitch 15 metres wide.
- **Setters first:** for the opening rounds, only goals that come from a setter's return count, so every attack has to find one.

## What to ask at the breaks

- "When did you shoot, and when did you choose the setter instead?"
- "Where did you run to after the pass went to the setter?"
- "Setters: how did you choose who to give it back to?"

## Where it comes from

The FA documents it in its England Football Learning sessions as "Set and shoot" (2022), shared by Adam Dunleavy, an FA coach development officer, with the setters on the goal line either side of each goal. A 2024 FA session for 12 to 16 year olds plays a 4v4 the same way, with two neutral players and two small goals at each end, and a goal after a neutral's return counting two. No source names who created it.
