## How to play

1. Split into threes. Each group gets a channel about 12 metres wide and 18 long with a small goal at each end. Set up as many channels side by side as you have groups.
2. The two attackers start at one end. The defender starts at the other and passes the ball to them to begin.
3. The attackers score in the defender's goal, passing to each other or dribbling, whatever gets them past.
4. If the defender wins the ball, they try to score in the goal at the attackers' end, and the attackers try to win it back.
5. After every attack, the defender swaps with one attacker, so everyone defends every third turn. With one or two players left over, a channel takes four: the fourth defends too, but starts behind the attackers and may only chase once they have the ball.

## The decision it trains

The player on the ball reads one thing: what is the defender doing? If the defender comes to the ball, the partner is free, so pass. If the defender hangs back to cut out the pass, there is room in front, so dribble forward until they have to commit. The partner without the ball decides where to be: wide enough that one defender cannot cover both, ready to run round the outside (an overlap) or to give the ball straight back (a one-two). The defender tries to make one attacker do it alone: stand where the pass is shut and the dribbler is slowed, and pick the moment to step in. When the ball changes hands, so does everyone's job.

## Make it harder or easier

- **Too hard:** the defender may only intercept passes, not tackle.
- **Too easy:** narrow the channel to about 9 metres, so the defender is close to both attackers.
- **Next step:** a goal that comes straight from a one-two or an overlap is worth 2.

## What to ask at the breaks

- "When did you pass, and when did you keep the ball? What was the defender doing each time?"
- "Without the ball, where did you stand so your partner could find you?"
- "Defending against two, what did you try to stop first?"

## Where it comes from

The FA documents it in its England Football Learning sessions as "2v1s to score" (2026), in a session the FA's Darren Grover delivers for 7 to 11 year olds. A 2024 session shared by Lawrence Lok, the FA's national coach development lead, has the same 2v1 in threes, with the attackers getting past the defender and over a line or past a cone instead of into a goal. No source names who created it.
