How to play
- Mark a 20 by 15 metre area with a cone gate at each end. Six players make two teams of three. Blue starts with all three players inside; red has two inside and one in its own gate. Use one ball.
- Blue keeps the ball and looks for a pass to the red player in the far gate. Completing that pass scores 1 point for blue.
- The red gate player takes the ball into the game. At once, the blue player nearest blue's own gate drops into it. Red now attacks with three against two blue defenders and a blue gate player.
- If the two defenders win the ball before a point is scored, they pass back to their own gate player to bring that player into the game. The opponent nearest their own gate drops into it. This release pass does not score a point: points come from passes into the opposition gate.
- Keep playing through the changes. Only the defending team has a player in a gate; all three attackers play inside. With more players, set up another game of six so nobody waits.
The decision it trains
The scoring pass gives the ball away on purpose. Before playing it, the attackers need to see who is nearest their own gate and who can stop the counterattack. Take the point, then react: one drops back and two close the space.
The two defenders have another choice when they win the ball. Can they find their gate player before the opponents press? That pass brings a third teammate into play. The gate player reads the ball and the space together, ready to join as soon as the pass arrives.

What to ask at the breaks
"Before we scored, who was nearest our own gate?"
"When you won the ball with only two players, could you find your teammate in the gate?"
"What changed the moment the gate player joined in?"

Who documents it
1 sources · each opens the originalThe Football Association of Ireland publishes this as "3 v 2 + 1 Possession with Transition", session 234 in its coaching library. It specifies six players, a 20 by 15 metre area, a point for a pass into the opposition gate and the player changes after a score or a regain. It does not name an inventor or specify a duration or gate width. Hobbit suggests it for U8 to U14 groups that can pass and receive under pressure; the source does not specify an age. The adjustments and session timing above are also Hobbit's suggestions.
