How to set it up
- In a 20 by 20 metre area mark five small safe zones, about 2 by 2 metres: one near each corner and one in the middle.
- Every player has a ball.
- Split the group into three or four teams of hunters; one team hunts at a time, holding a bib each.
How to play
- Dribblers go from safe zone to safe zone. Each zone reached scores a point.
- Three zones in a row without being hit scores a bonus of two more.
- A hunter who hits a dribbler's ball with a bib sends that dribbler's score back to zero.
- Safe zones are safe, but nobody may stay in one for more than three seconds, and only two players can be in a zone at once.
- Two-minute rounds; then the next team hunts. Add up the team scores at the end.
Why it works
The bonus for three in a row is the hook. A child on a streak has something to protect, so they start to weigh the risk: the near zone, or the far one with no hunters around it?
Because a hit resets the score instead of knocking the child out, nobody sits on the side. They lose their points and go straight back in.
What to coach
- Before you leave a zone, look: where are the hunters?
- Close control when a hunter is near; long touches and speed when the path is clear.
- Keep the ball on the side away from the hunter.
- Pick the zone that gives you the most space, not the closest one.
Questions to ask
- "How did you decide when to leave the safe zone?"
- "Which zone did you go to, and why that one?"
- "When you had a streak going, did you play differently?"
Make it easier, make it harder
- Easier: lose one point when hit instead of going back to zero; fewer hunters; bigger zones.
- Harder: only an empty zone scores; hunters may tackle instead of throwing; one-second limit in a zone.
How to adapt it by age
- U5 to U6: hunters are spider-men, a bib touch on the body counts, losing one point instead of all.
- U7 to U8: the full reset and the streak bonus; each hunter must change target after a hit.
- U9 to U10: hunters defend freely and can tackle; zones only score when empty.
