How to set it up
- Mark a 30 by 20 metre area with a halfway line and a goal with a goalkeeper at each end.
- Two teams of four or five, one ball.
How to play
- While the attacking team has not yet crossed the halfway line, any defender who is in the attackers' half cannot go back into their own half.
- As soon as one attacker crosses the halfway line with or without the ball, defenders may run back freely.
- Goals only count from the opponents' half.
- No corners: a ball over the end line restarts with the goalkeeper.
Why it works
The rule freezes the defenders who pressed high, which opens up the space behind them. The attacking team can see it and has a moment to use it.
The child on the ball now faces the real choice of running with the ball: a big touch into the space and a sprint before the defenders recover, or a pass to a teammate already moving into it.
What to coach
- Look for the space behind the defenders before you receive.
- Receive facing forward, with the first touch going into the space.
- Big touches and speed in open space, close control when a defender comes back.
- Teammates: run beyond the ball carrier to offer a pass into the space.
Questions to ask
- "Where was the space when you got the ball?"
- "When did you switch from running with the ball to keeping it close?"
- "How did your team use the moment before the defenders could come back?"
Make it easier, make it harder
- Easier: a longer pitch; defenders frozen until the ball, not a player, crosses the halfway line.
- Harder: only three seconds of freeze after a turnover; goals only count if the ball is carried over the halfway line in one run.
How to adapt it by age
- U8 to U10: goalkeepers rotate, a long pitch, the freeze rule as written.
- U11 to U13: fixed goalkeepers and a bonus goal for a shot taken within five seconds of crossing halfway.
- U14 to U16: a bigger area, 5v5 or 6v6, and the three-second freeze.
